Marius Samulevičius

Marius is an award-winning tattoo artist with twenty seven years of experience. He is also an accomplished oil painter, having participated in gallery shows in France, Quebec, and now in his own gallery/studio in Ottawa, Ontario. Working on a day to day basis with needles has also allowed Marius to develop an extremely detailed approach to his painting technique. Marius is able to extract the maximum amount of detail from his subject using brushes sometimes measuring just a millimetre across. Some of his larger pieces take upwards of 100 hours to complete.

Marius studied at the College of Art in his hometown of Kaunas, Lithuania. Having also lived in the UK, France, and Canada, Marius brings both an eye for detail and a nomad’s spirit to his work. He is fascinated by pushing the boundaries of style, and creating fusion inspired works. Marius is consistently driven by a desire to improve on his last piece, always seeking to evolve and push towards more originality.

Playing on the irony of using a flat two-dimensional surface to explore the intricate depth of the human condition, Marius is engaging with the idea that we are a fractured and complex assembly of parts. Having explored both landscape and still life painting, Marius is currently focused on the human form, aiming to fuse the notion of a classic portrait with surrealism to explore the many facets of our sense of self
